Upcon® Upconverting Nanoparticle Technology - How Does it Work?

Unique detection technology providing exceptional sensitivity

Upcon® is a complete system built around novel upconverting nanoparticle (UCNP) labeling technology based on photon upconversion. It combines highly luminescent nanoparticles with robust, easy-to-use instruments, software, and technical support, bringing powerful performance to research as well as life science and diagnostic applications.

The technology uses near-infrared excitation (980 nm) and detects emission at shorter visible wavelengths. This avoids interference from autofluorescence and results in exceptionally clear signals.

The image shows benefits of upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs) compared to conventional fluorophores. With conventional fluorophores, there is slight overlap of the UV excitation and emission peaks. The emission is also significantly affected by autofluorescence. With UCNPs, the NIR excitation and large anti-Skoke's shift enable measurement free of autofluorescence. UCNPs have bright, discrete emission bands.
Upcon particles convert long-wavelength near-infrared (NIR) excitation to emission at shorter, visible wavelengths. The large anti-Stoke’s shift enables measurement free from autofluorescence.
